Welcome to the Deadspin 25, a college football poll that strives to be more democratic and less useless than every other preseason poll. Leading up to the college football season kickoff, we will give you previews of the 25 teams that you, the readers, voted to be most worthy of writing about. Now, No. 15 Notre Dame. You guys are really going to make me preview Notre Dame, huh? Ya know, there used to be a time when a team like this being voted into the Deadspin 25 was an anomaly, not the norm. You were supposed to be better than the AP. For shame, readers. Head coach Brian Kelly is still a dick and has survived numerous hot-seat situations for nearing a decade, yet there he remains, steering the program. The Fighting Irish posted a 10-3 record in 2017, miles from where they found …
Some people are fans of the New England Patriots. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the New England Patriots. This 2015 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all of the team previews here. Your team: the New England Patriots. Well well well. Looks like we’ve finally reached the top of SUCK MOUNTAIN. We’re definitely ending on a low note here. Your 2014 record: 12-4*. Super Bowl champions*. Saved at the last minute by future Raider Malcolm Butler. Your coach: Bill Belichick, shown here eating your mom’s brain matter to bring about sexual arousal: With one more Super Bowl win*, Belichick will have more Super Bowl victories* than any other head coach, and will likely cement his legacy* as the greatest coach in NFL history*. Also, he adores lo…
Some people are fans of the San Diego Chargers. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the San Diego Chargers. This 2012 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read the other Why Your Team Sucks 2012 previews here. 1. NORV. He's still there! How is that possible? Listen to Dean Spanos tie himself in knots trying to sidestep admitting that he was too cheap and too lazy to fire Norv and hire an actual coach: "A lot of the fans never gave him a chance when he came here," Spanos said. "I think it's unfair. When you look at his record… albeit, we've fallen off and we're in the middle right now, and it's not where we want to be… Just look at Norv's record, okay? Oh, wait. Don't look at the last part of it. That …
Welcome to Deadspin's first and likely last annual NHL Draft Diary. Follow along with due reverence for the most thrilling pageant in all of sport. 7:00—Our first graphic: "TSN: Canada's Sports Leader." Where are we, again? My cable box says Versus, but everything's coming up maple! 7:00—Here's a gaggle of white dudes, young and old—allegedly some of hockey's top prospects and their handlers—in discount suits, walking toward something. The voice over the tape—it belongs to TSN's James Duthie—tells us that we are in St. Paul, Minnesota, and that this was at 3:50 Central Time, this afternoon. Let me submit that this is possibly the least dramatic piece of film TSN could have chosen to begin the draft. This, or a compilation of tenth-rank…

data-mm-id=”_52byutnu7″>Author’s note: For the past few years, I’ve searched for videos of John Madden and Pat Summerall celebrating Thanksgiving. Much to my chagrin, they did not exist online. Much thanks to Fox Sports for putting this compilation video together to accompany this piece. This story originally ran in November 2016.For over 20 years, John Madden and Pat Summerall were a quintessential part of the American Thanksgiving experience. They were an institution. On Thanksgiving and Sundays throughout the Fall, they had a gravitas that conveyed the game at hand was a big deal and a relatable sincerity, in their triumphs and struggles, that made them transcend the screen. You felt like you were watching the game with them in your living room.“[That] is the goal,” the…
data-mm-id=”_0rag7x0ff”>The fates of James Harden and Daryl Morey will forever be inextricably linked in the annals of NBA history. Both Morey and Harden were relatively unknown quantities when the former took a big swing by bringing the latter to Houston. Harden was a Sixth Man of the Year winner and could rack up points, but no one was sure what his game would look like when separated from Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Before the trade, Morey was most known for giving Jeremy Lin a big deal after Linsanity and successfully turning around Kyle Lowry's career after bringing him into the fold in 2009. Eight years after the fact, Morey is generally viewed as one of the league's best front-office employees and his decision to send Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb, and three draft …
data-mm-id=”_fyq6164rm”>Jon Jones won't be punished by the UFC for his latest DUI. In what is an absolutely absurd decision, UFC president Dana White says he has no plans to punish his light heavyweight champion for his reckless behavior outside the octagon.Jones struck a plea agreement after this latest incident where he received four days of house arrest, probation and is required to do a remote drug treatment program. He's incredibly lucky to have gotten off so lightly. He was arrested on March 26 after testing at twice the legal limit following a field sobriety test. At the time of the arrest I wrote the following about Jones' disturbing history:”This is now the third incident Jones has had while driving. He had a DUI in 2012 when he drove his Bentley into a pole. In…

data-mm-id=”_yh772blot”>The Los Angeles Lakers won their 17th NBA championship on October 11 and look like a completely different team roughly six weeks later. Somehow, the team that led the Western Conference for most of the 2019-20 season won a title in the league's Orlando bubble got much better this offseason. All credit for those marked improvements should go to Rob Pelinka. The Lakers' vice president of basketball operations and general manager was much maligned during his first few years on the job. But over the course of the last three offseasons he's proven himself one of the NBA's top executives. In 2018 he helped the Lakers land LeBron James. For an encore in 2019, he engineered a blockbuster trade that brought Anthony Davis to Los Angeles. He also deserv…
